Menopause and Hair Loss
The day I fully accepted that I was slowly losing my hair was a tough day. Hot sweats, wrinkles, sagging skin? Minor problems! 😉
Hair loss? That was just one step too far hormones!
It was about a year ago when I began noticing that my part was getting wider and wider. It was becoming a battle every morning attempting to hide my thinning areas and I was desperate to find some solutions to this problem.
My goal was to:
a) find ways to camouflage my thinning areas
b) to slow down or stop any additional hair loss
c) ideally help grow back some or most of my hair loss
How I Began to Camouflage My Thinning Hair
There are lots of products on the market that can help with camouflaging hair loss. My favourite product is actually designed to cover grey at the roots – or hair in need of a dye job.
I first discovered Colour WOW root cover up powder from one of our master hairstylists here at Age Perfect Beauty.
Colour WOW is a powdered product that comes with a double ended brush. One end of the brush is thick to camouflage larger areas on the scalp while the other end is a more defined brush that helps to build coverage in smaller areas.
Here’s what I like about Colour WOW:
- it’s a water resistant formulation which is ideal for a sweaty scalp – perfect for hot flashes (thank you menopause!) that cause my scalp to sweat. 😏 Once it’s applied, it stays put.
- because the powder ‘stays put’ I don’t have to worry about it transferring to my clothing ✔
The Colour Wow Root Colour blends very well into the thinning areas of my hair loss and creates the illusion that my part is thicker than it actually is. It’s been a blessing on those days I’ve felt really down about my hair loss.
As I mentioned above, there are lots of similar products on the market – for a less expensive option you could also try Clairol also does a similar root touch up product. Colour WOW wins top place for me because of it’s water resistant qualities.
Products That Helped Protect My Hair From Further Loss & Into Better Condition
I found Olaplex trio (#3, 4, 5) by chance at a hair salon close to my home. I periodically go into this salon to pick up Redken styling products. (which are in my opinion some of the best styling products on the market)
Over the years I’ve come to trust one of the hairstylists that works at this salon. Every time she has suggested a new hair product to me I’ve been impressed.
So naturally when she told me about these 3 hair products from Olaplex and how it would help strengthen my hair, I didn’t hesitate and brought them home to experiment.
The 3-step process is meant to repair, restore and protect damaged hair. It has a patented technology which re-links bonds in hair that have been damaged by chemical or heat styling.
After 3 months use, my hair feels healthier and feels stronger than it has in years.
There are actually 5 steps to the entire system and 2 of them are done in salon during hair processing. I have yet to try all 5 steps but am planning to this year.
Here is What Helped to Slow Down Further Hair Loss
There is a lot of misinformation on the market about why some women lose their hair during menopause.
Falling oestrogen and progesterone levels that occur during menopause can affect hair breakage and hair thinning and also the ability to grow hair.
After doing some research I decided to try 5% Minoxidil Rogaine for Women. It had some mixed reviews but some of the reviews were from women in menopause. I thought….it couldn’t hurt to try!
Although after almost 3 months I have not noticed any major re-growth. From everything I’ve read it can take up to 27 weeks or longer to see any major results so patience is required.
I can say that I’m not losing as much hair as I once did….so is it this product? Could very well be.
Supplements
In addition to Rogaine for Women I also added a supplement into my diet called Biotin. I’m taking 10,000 mcg every morning at breakfast. Biotin is a B complex vitamin (vitamin B7) that is supposed to be great for hair, skin and nails especially for women during menopause.
Since taking Biotin my hair is a lot shinier and I have been asked by friends and clients alike what I’ve been using.
I feel that between Olaplex, Rogaine and Biotin my hair actually looks healthier so I will continue with all 3. Whether it’s helping to regrow my hair back is yet to be determined.
Using The Best Products I Can Find To Help Build Volume
I’ve always dealt with fine hair so hair volume has always been important to me but at this point in my life, it’s mandatory! Here are some of the products I use regularly
- Dry Shampoo
- Rotating non-silicone shampoos with silicone shampoo’s (I use a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove built up silicones from my scalp/hair)
- adding in volume styling products such as a thickening mousse
Dry Shampoo Favourites:
Batiste Dry Shampoo is my go-to. It’s inexpensive and it just simply works. I spray it onto my roots, massage in and style my hair as normal. I use it to puff up my thinning hair or when I want to go an extra day in-between washes. It absorbs the oil from my scalp allowing me to obtain more volume in my hair.
Label m Dry Shampoo is simply amazing. I have carried this dry shampoo in my professional hair kit for years because it really works! It provides incredible volume without drying hair too much. It’s not exactly cost friendly but it is worth the price in my opinion.
Clarifying Shampoo Once Per Week
I started to incorporate a clarifying shampoo once a week into my cleansing routine.
Most shampoo’s and conditioners have silicone in them which is fine but can weigh hair down after long periods of use. Adding in adding a clarifying shampoo like Live Clean Healthy Scalp Shampoo cleans my scalp well, eliminates build-up of other products and gets my hair back in squeaky clean condition.
Not all was rosy with my hair loss experiments though. This was a major failure!
👎 Pura d’or Gold Label Anti –Thinning Shampoo and Conditioner👎
At the very beginning of my test journey, I decided to try an all natural hair product line assuming the less harmful chemicals in my hair the better. When you change your shampoo and conditioner formulations to organic products that have less chemicals, Parabens, etc., you are supposed to allow your hair time to get used to the new ‘clean’ products.
It’s said that your hair will go through a withdrawal period while the build up of other products are removed from your scalp and your hair could initially look bad/heavy/oily but one day you’re supposed to wake up to beautiful healthy full looking hair. So ‘THEY’ say.
BUT THEY’D BE WRONG!
I used the Pura d’or Gold Label Anti Thinning Shampoo and Conditioner for almost 1.5 months before I started with the Opalex system.
I used both the shampoo and conditioner and my hair felt consistently limp and extremely dry. Everyday turned into a BAD hair day!
Although the company claims it can take up to 3 months to see positive results I just didn’t have the confidence in the products to keep going.
1.5 months is a long time to torture yourself with bad hair especially when you’re already dealing with hair loss issues.
